VG 95218-29 Water-Blocked Submarine Outboard Cable

Pressure-tight submarine outboard and hull-penetrator cables designed and manufactured to VG 95218 Part 29 (Types LWDC, LWD, PLWDC, PLWDCC and PLWDC-C). Engineered for 100 bar transversal (radial) hydrostatic pressure and 63 bar longitudinal water-blocking, in cross-linked halogen-free elastomer (Parts 29B–29F, 29N) or flexible polyurethane PUR sheaths (Parts 29G–29M).

Product overview

Submarine outboard installations—including bow and flank sonar arrays, hydrophone staves, periscope and optronic mast hoists,rudder/hydroplane actuators and external torpedo tube sensors—operate continuously in high-pressure seawater outside the pressure hull. If an outboard cable jacket is severed or abraded at depth, hydrostatic pressure can drive seawater axially along conductor interstices and through hull penetrators unless the cable core is internally sealed.

Cables designed and manufactured to German military standard VG 95218 Part 29 provide verified 100 bar transversal (radial) water tightness and 63 bar longitudinal water blocking across a 20,000-hour design lifetime. The standard defines two longitudinal sealing classes: Type LWDC / LWD (Parts 29D, 29J, 29M, 29N), which are completely longitudinally water-blocked including the individual fine-stranded tinned-copper conductors via central water-blocking elements, tapes and elastomeric fillers; and Type PLWDC / PLWDCC / PLWDC-C (Parts 29B, 29C, 29E, 29F, 29G, 29H, 29K, 29L), which are partially longitudinally water-blocked to 63 bar across all cable and screen interstices.

Two outer sheath systems match specific routing zones: cross-linked halogen-free flame-retardant elastomer (VG 95218-8 Sheath Type E, −40 °C to +90 °C, Parts 29B–29F and 29N) for combined outboard and inboard submarine runs requiring toxicity index below 5, low smoke density and non-corrosive fire gases; and flame-retardant polyurethane PUR (VG 95218-8 Sheath Type F, −50 °C to +90 °C, Parts 29G–29M) for outboard fixed routing and dynamic flexible drag chains.

All screened constructions incorporate tinned copper wire braids achieving maximum surface transfer impedance of 30 mΩ/m on overall-screened LWDC/PLWDC types and 15 mΩ/m on pair-screened PLWDCC (uninsulated pair screens) and PLWDC-C (electrically isolated pair screens). Review the four VG 95218-29 dimensional tables below to specify the exact part designation.

Longitudinally Water-Blocked Submarine Outboard Cable – VG 95218-29 Type LWDC, PLWDC, PLWDCC & PLWDC-C (XL-FR / PUR) construction
ComponentMaterial and construction
ConductorFine-stranded tinned copper wire; on full LWDC / LWD builds (Parts 29D, 29J, 29M, 29N), each conductor incorporates a central water-blocking element and water-blocking tape for 63 bar strand-level sealing.
Core InsulationSpecial cross-linked elastomer with printed core numbers (white with black numbers on Parts 29B–29F; black with white numbers on Parts 29G–29L; black/blue on 2-core Parts 29M/29N).
Pair Screen (Types PLWDCC & PLWDC-C)Individual tinned copper wire braid over each twisted pair—either electrically common (PLWDCC, Parts 29E and 29K) or isolated by an extruded special elastomer inner covering (PLWDC-C, Parts 29F and 29L).
Longitudinal Water-Blocking SystemPressure-tight elastomeric water-blocking filling compound and swelling water-blocking tapes eliminating air voids across the cable core up to 63 bar axial and 100 bar radial hydrostatic pressure.
Overall EMC ScreenConcentric tinned copper wire braid over the water-blocked core assembly (transfer impedance ≤ 30 mΩ/m on LWDC/PLWDC; ≤ 15 mΩ/m on PLWDCC/PLWDC-C; unscreened on LWD 2×1.5).
Outer SheathBlack cross-linked flame-retardant halogen-free elastomer (VG 95218-8 Type E, −40 °C to +90 °C, inboard/outboard compliant) or black flame-retardant polyurethane PUR (VG 95218-8 Type F, −50 °C to +90 °C, outboard fixed and flexible drag chains).

Cables are designed and manufactured in accordance with VG 95218 Part 29 construction and dimensional specifications; where project procurement requires formal BAAINBw / QSTAG military qualification release, confirm specific VG part numbers during RFQ.

Source catalog note on VG 95218 Part 29M and Part 29N (LWD 2 × 1.5 mm²): the individual product boxes on Catalog p. 5 list Part 29M with a cross-linked sheath and Part 29N with a polyurethane sheath, whereas the master cross-reference table on Catalog p. 8 and the VG 95218-8 sheath table on Catalog p. 16 classify VG 95218-29 Types G to M under polyurethane Sheath Type F and VG95218T029N001 / N002 under cross-linked halogen-free sheath. Always specify the required outer sheath polymer (XL-FR or PUR) alongside the VG part number when ordering Part 29M or 29N.

Inboard submarine installation regulations require halogen-free, low-smoke, non-corrosive cables with a toxicity index below 5; select cross-linked Parts 29B, 29C, 29D, 29E, 29F or 29N whenever an outboard cable continues inside the submarine pressure hull.

Custom water-blocked outboard constructions—including hybrid power/signal cores, optical fibres, coaxial elements, aramid or steel tensile strain relief up to several tons, and 100 bar full-cable water blocking—can be engineered to project drawings.
