What counts as a high temperature wire?

A high temperature wire is a conductor whose insulation holds its electrical and mechanical properties above 90°C continuously. In practice the market starts at 105°C and runs to 250°C for hook-up wire, with fiberglass and mica constructions reaching 538°C. The insulation material, not the copper, sets the ceiling.

The failure mode is what matters. PVC does not melt at 120°C — it embrittles. Six months later someone flexes a loom during maintenance, the insulation cracks off in flakes, and you have a phase-to-frame fault nobody can explain. Silicone, fluoropolymers and cross-linked polyolefins are used above 90°C precisely because they age gracefully instead of turning into a shell.

Three numbers decide the specification: continuous conductor temperature, rated voltage, and what the wire is rubbing against. Get those three right and everything else is a stocking question.

High temp hook up wire, by insulation family

Five families cover almost every enquiry that reaches us. The differences are less about the top temperature number and more about how each one behaves when you bend it, rub it, or spill something on it.

Silicone rubber — 105°C to 250°C

The flexible one. Class 5 and Class 6 strandings stay soft at temperature, which is why motor leads and oven looms are almost always silicone. It scuffs easily, so add a fiberglass braid anywhere it can rub. Burns to a non-conductive SiO₂ ash instead of a carbon track. See the silicone hook up wire styles and diameters.

PTFE — up to 250°C

Thin wall, chemically inert, excellent dielectric strength. Where a silicone wire needs 0.8 mm of insulation, PTFE does the job in 0.33 mm — that is how you get a 40-way loom into a connector shell designed for 24. Stiffer than silicone, so mind the bend radius. See the PTFE hook up wire styles and dimensions.

PFA — 150°C to 250°C

Melt-processable cousin of PTFE with the same chemical resistance and a smoother, more uniform wall. Strips and cuts cleanly, which matters when you are terminating hundreds of heater or thermocouple leads. Nickel-plated copper is standard above 200°C. See the PFA hook up wire styles and diameters.

FEP — 150°C to 200°C

The value fluoropolymer. Not as hot as PTFE or PFA, but cheaper, more flexible and available in every colour, so it dominates instrument, sensor and lighting wiring. Transparent grades exist for where you need to see the conductor. See the FEP hook up wire range and dimensions.

XLPE / XLPO — 90°C to 150°C

Cross-linked polyolefin gives you halogen-free, low-smoke performance with real mechanical toughness and a thin wall. The 125°C grades (3266, 3173, 3271) are the default for switchgear, motor windings and photovoltaic or energy-storage strings.

Fiberglass braided — 200°C and above

A silicone core with a coated fiberglass braid over it, in AWG 20 through 400 MCM. The braid takes the abrasion so the silicone does not have to. 200c wire or 250c wire: which do you actually need?

If your conductor sees 180°C, a 200°C wire has almost no headroom left and a 250°C wire costs meaningfully more. Measure the real hot spot, add about 20°C of margin, and buy the class above that number — not the class above the one you were going to buy anyway.

The plating point catches people out more than anything else on this page. A 250°C insulation over tinned copper is not a 250°C wire — tin melts at 232°C, and you have built a beautifully insulated failure. Above 200°C the conductor gets nickel plating, and much of the price step is that, not the polymer.

Above 10 kV: high-voltage and igniter wire

Once you pass 10 kV the design problem changes. Insulation wall stops being a rounding error and becomes most of the outside diameter, and on igniter circuits the conductor itself can sit at temperatures that would destroy any ordinary polymer.

UL 3239 silicone shows the wall problem plainly: on the same AWG 20 conductor the insulation grows from 0.50 mm at 3 kV to 3.11 mm at 60 kV, taking the overall diameter from 1.91 mm to 7.20 mm. Nothing about the copper changed. If a 60 kV lead will not fit your gland, that is why.

Wall thickness is only the first rung. Above roughly 10 kV the construction itself changes — braiding, screening, then a full seven-layer medium-voltage build — and we set the whole ladder out on our high voltage silicone cable page.

Flare stack and burner igniters go further again. Those constructions are rated to 25 kV DC / 17 kV AC, and the fiberglass-jacketed version carries a maximum conductor temperature of 538°C (1,000°F) — roughly twice what the hottest hook-up wire on this page will tolerate. A fluoropolymer-jacketed version of the same design trades that ceiling down to 250°C in exchange for better cut and abrasion resistance in the open.

3 kV to 60 kV silicone (UL 3239)

European designations: the same materials, a different vocabulary

Everything above this point is written in UL AWM style numbers, because that is how North America buys high temperature wire. Europe buys the same materials by type designation — VDE, EN 50525, BS — and a buyer who asks for SiHF is asking for something we also build. This index maps the designations we are asked for most often.

Two of these are worth calling out. 2GTL is the only medium-voltage entry here — if you are wiring a transformer or a generator winding above 1 kV, it is the one to look at, and nothing in the UL style index above goes there. And tri-rated is PVC, not an elastomer; it belongs in this list because it competes for the same panel-wiring position, not because it is a high temperature cable in the sense the rest of this page means.

How to specify a high temperature wire in five lines

Send us these five things and we can quote without a single follow-up email. Miss one and the quote takes three days longer than it needs to.

1. The real hot spot

Not the ambient, not the cabinet rating. The temperature the conductor reaches at that point in the machine, at full load, in summer. If you have not measured it, say so and we will assume a margin.

2. Voltage and test voltage

Rated working voltage plus any type-test voltage you are held to. On HV grades the test voltage often drives the wall more than the working voltage does.

3. Flex duty

Static loom, occasional maintenance flex, or continuous motion? Class 5 versus Class 6 stranding and silicone versus PTFE turn on this one answer.

4. Mechanical and chemical exposure

Abrasion against steel, oil, solvent, coolant, welding spatter, UV. This decides whether a fiberglass braid or a fluoropolymer jacket goes over the insulation.

5. Approvals you must show

UL AWM style number, cUL, VDE, CE with RoHS and REACH, or a customer specification. Tell us the target and we confirm the scope before you commit.

    What is the highest temperature wire available?

    For hook-up wire, 250°C is the practical ceiling, using PTFE, PFA or the 3253 silicone family. Above that you move into fiberglass and mica constructions: igniter wire with a fiberglass jacket is rated to 538°C (1,000°F) conductor temperature, but it is a specialist ignition product, not a general power conductor.

    Is silicone or PTFE better for high temperature wire?

    Silicone if it has to stay flexible and take repeated bending; PTFE if it has to be thin, chemically inert or fit a crowded connector. Both reach 250°C in their top grades. Silicone scuffs easily and usually wants a fiberglass braid; PTFE is stiffer and needs a larger bend radius.

    What does UL AWM mean on a wire?

    AWM stands for Appliance Wiring Material. A UL AWM style number is a recognised construction: it fixes the insulation material, the temperature rating and the voltage rating. Quoting UL 3135 tells a manufacturer far more, far faster, than describing a silicone wire in a sentence.

    What is the difference between UL 3132, 3133 and 3135?

    All three are silicone insulated. UL 3132 is 150°C at 300 V, UL 3133 is 150°C at 600 V, and UL 3135 is 200°C at 600 V. The insulation wall and the compound grade change with the rating; the conductor can be the same in all three.

    Can I use tinned copper in a 250c wire?

    No. Tin melts at 232°C, so a 250°C rated insulation over tinned copper will fail at the conductor long before the polymer gives up. Wires rated above 200°C use nickel-plated copper, and that plating is a significant part of the price difference between 200°C and 250°C classes.

    What high temp wire should I use for heating elements?

    Two different answers. To feed a heating element, use PFA UL 1727 or 10362 at 250°C on nickel-plated copper. To be the heating element, use a resistance heating wire such as UL 3590 — resistance alloy on a glass-fibre core with silicone insulation, built to a resistance value between 0.5 and 12,000 ohms.

    Do you supply high temperature wire in AWG or mm²?

    Both. UL AWM styles are quoted in AWG, typically AWG 36 through AWG 10 depending on the style, and fiberglass braided silicone runs to 400 MCM. European and IEC constructions are quoted in mm², from 0.5 mm² up to 240 mm² and beyond on request.

    How high a voltage can a high temperature wire take?

    Silicone UL 3239 is built in voltage classes from 3 kV to 60 kV DC at 200°C, with the insulation wall growing from 0.50 mm to 3.11 mm across that range. Igniter constructions run to 25 kV DC / 17 kV AC. Standard hook-up styles stop at 600 V or 1000 V.

    What is your minimum order for high temperature wire?

    50 metres. We would rather you qualify a short length on the actual machine than commit to a drum on paper. Free samples are available and you cover only the sample freight; production lead time is 10 to 30 days, confirmed before the order is placed.
