NSGAFÖU Cable for Switchgear and Railway Equipment
NSGAFÖU is a 1.8/3 kV single-core flexible rubber cable used for protected wiring in switchboards, electrical devices, railway vehicles and buses. The designation is also written as NSGAFOU or NSGAFOEU.
Use this cable when the installation needs a flexible, insulated single conductor and the route is dry, enclosed or otherwise mechanically protected. The 1.8/3 kV rating is a cable designation; short-circuit-proof or earth-fault-proof use depends on the complete installation, protection and applicable local rules.
- Best fit: control cabinets, switchgear, device wiring, rail vehicles and buses.
- Confirm before ordering: conductor size, bend radius, temperature, oil exposure, marking and required VDE or project evidence.
- Do not assume: outdoor, wet, direct-burial or unprotected routing approval from the model name alone.
Review the Industrial Cable category for related rubber cables. For a quotation, send the conductor size, route, installation voltage and documentation requirement.
Procurement note: identify the vehicle or switchgear family and the required marking so the supplier can align the quoted build and test file.
Construction
The NSGAFÖU reference construction is a single-core rubber-insulated cable with a protective outer sheath.
| Layer | Reference construction |
|---|---|
| Conductor | Class 5 fine-stranded tinned copper |
| Insulation | EPR rubber compound, 3GI3 reference |
| Outer sheath | Chlorinated rubber compound, 5GM5 reference; black commonly supplied |
| Form | Single core for enclosed or protected routing |
Final conductor cross-section, sheath thickness, outside diameter, marking and colour must be confirmed for the quoted size.
Reference family and where this cable sits in it
This designation is the chlorinated-rubber, unscreened member of a four-part family issued to DIN VDE 0250 Parts 602 and 606. The members differ in sheath compound and in whether a screen is fitted, and those two choices set the bending radius and the fire behaviour.
| Designation | Sheath compound | Rated voltages | Screen | Minimum bending radius |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NSGAFÖU | 5GM3 chlorinated rubber, oil resistant, self-extinguishing | 1.8/3 kV and 3.6/6 kV | None | 4 × D |
| NSHXAFÖ | HM3 halogen-free polymer, oil resistant, self-extinguishing, low smoke | 1.8/3 kV and 3.6/6 kV | None | 6 × D |
| NSGAFCMOEU | 5GM3 chlorinated rubber | 3.6/6 kV | CMOE, helix of tinned copper wires | 4 × D |
| NSHXAFCMOE | HM3 halogen-free | 3.6/6 kV | CMOE, helix of tinned copper wires | 6 × D |
The bending radius is set by the sheath compound, not by the voltage or the screen: the chlorinated-rubber builds are 4 × D and the halogen-free builds 6 × D. An inner semi-conducting layer is present on the 6 kV types. All four share a flexible tinned copper conductor of class 5 and 3GI3 EPR-based insulation, with a black sheath.
Surface temperature, fixed against flexing
The two limits are not the same number, and a cable rated for −40 °C in a fixed installation is not rated for −40 °C while it is being moved.
| Fixed installation | −40 °C to +80 °C |
|---|---|
| Flexing | −25 °C to +80 °C |
The 90 °C figure quoted for this family is the maximum conductor temperature and is a different quantity from the surface temperature above. State the lowest expected temperature and whether the run is fixed or flexed with the enquiry.
Reference size and voltage ranges
The reference catalogue runs wider than a single voltage. State the voltage with the size, because the insulation wall and therefore the overall diameter change between them.
| Build | Reference range |
|---|---|
| 1.8/3 kV, unscreened | 1.5 mm² to 300 mm² |
| 3.6/6 kV, unscreened | 1.5 mm² to 185 mm² |
| 3.6/6 kV, CMOE screened | 185 mm² only, which is the maximum cross-section DIN VDE 0250 Part 602 sets for this voltage class |
Nominal fire load, halogen-free builds
The nominal fire load applies to the halogen-free HM3 builds, NSHXAFÖ and NSHXAFCMOE, and is the figure rail and tunnel projects ask for when totalling the fire load of a cable route.
| Build | Nominal fire load |
|---|---|
| 1.8/3 kV halogen-free | 0.20 kWh/m at 1.5 mm², rising to 2.62 kWh/m at 300 mm² |
| 3.6/6 kV halogen-free | 0.45 kWh/m at 1.5 mm², rising to 2.42 kWh/m at 185 mm² |
| 3.6/6 kV CMOE screened halogen-free | 4.58 kWh/m at 185 mm² |
Sustained current loading in the reference data is stated at a 30 °C ambient with the cable free in air, as in DIN VDE 0298 Part 4 Table 11, and must be corrected for the installed condition.
The fire-load figures above do not apply to this cable: they belong to the halogen-free HM3 siblings. Where a project totals the fire load of a route, the halogen-free build is the one to quote.
Where the family is used
The reference application is fixed installation in trucks and buses, in conduits and closed installation systems, and the connection of mobile parts. The 3 kV types are additionally used inside low-voltage switchboards to secure internal interconnections against short circuit and earth connection. The CMOE screened builds are the ones designed for higher mechanical stressing, typically as the connection element for heating circuits.
For the halogen-free equivalent see NSHXAFÖ halogen-free rubber cable. For the CMOE screened build used on heating circuits see NSGAFCMOEU screened heating circuit cable, and for the small-section 2/3.6 kV vehicle interconnection cable see CGAU single-core vehicle cable.
Applications
- Switchboards, switchgear and power-distribution equipment
- Control cabinets, machines and electrical devices
- Railway vehicles and buses
- Ducts, tubes, conduits and closed installation channels
- Bundled or movable-part connections where the installation is protected
Type-reference literature describes short-circuit-proof use in selected switching and distribution arrangements up to 1,000 V. The complete installation, protection and local code must control that decision. For general flexible portable power, compare H07RN-F cable.
