SOOW Cable for 600V Portable Power
SOOW cable is a 600 V extra-hard-usage flexible cord for industrial equipment, heavy tools, battery chargers, portable lighting, welding leads, dockside connections and temporary power. The type name points buyers toward oil-resistant insulation and jacket plus weather-resistant service, but the exact listing, conductor size, core count and ampacity still depend on the selected construction and destination code.
TEBAOFLEX builds SOOW across 18 through 2 AWG with two, three, four or five conductors. If you are still deciding between types, what the SOOW, SJOOW and SEOOW letters mean sets out the voltage, compound and temperature differences side by side. Use the Specifications tab for the ampacity of each size, then confirm ambient temperature, grouping, connector rating, voltage drop and cable entry before procurement.
- Best fit: portable industrial power and extra-hard-usage equipment.
- Confirm: AWG, conductor count, length, jacket colour, listing and termination system.
- Choose SJOOW instead: when the equipment circuit is limited to a 300 V junior-service cord.
Compare the SJOOW 300 V page and the Industrial Cable category before sending the RFQ.
Procurement note: include ambient temperature, grouping, cable length and termination details when using the reference ampacity data.
Construction

| Component | Reference construction |
|---|---|
| Conductor | Class K stranded bare copper; ASTM B174 reference |
| Insulation | Heat-, moisture- and oil-resistant EPDM rubber reference |
| Fillers | Waxed paper or equivalent fillers as required by the build |
| Outer jacket | Flexible black CPE reference; colour options by quotation |
Conductor stranding, jacket thickness, outside diameter and weight vary with AWG and core count. The quoted table controls.
Applications

- Portable industrial machinery and heavy tools
- Bus drop cords from busway or bus duct plug-in units down to machinery, where the applicable electrical code permits extra-hard-usage cord
- Battery chargers, portable lights and service equipment
- Temporary power extensions and equipment leads
- Marine dockside and severe-environment connections where the selected build is suitable
- Mining and workshop equipment requiring a flexible 600 V cord
SOOW is not a substitute for a medium-voltage, continuous-reeling, lifting or hazardous-area cable. Confirm the route, movement frequency, connector, oil or chemical exposure and required listing. For a 300 V junior-service option, compare SJOOW cable.

Certification: UL 62 category ZJCZ Flexible Cord, certificate UL-US-2449012-4; CSA C22.2 No. 49 category ZJCZ7, certificate UL-CA-2437036-5. Product may be supplied bearing the UL Mark.
Ampacity for a flexible cord depends on the size, the number of current-carrying conductors and the installation conditions, so confirm it against the applicable code edition for your project rather than reading it from a catalogue. Send the equipment current, ambient temperature, grouping and run length and the engineering team will confirm the build.
Two AWG is where SOOW stops. UL 62 covers portable cord through 2 AWG, and NEC Table 400.5(A)(1) ends at the same size. Above it the correct product is not a larger SOOW but Type W portable power cable, which is built to a different standard and rated to 2000 V. Ask the engineering team to route the enquiry if the load needs more than the 95 A that a 2 AWG cord carries.
Ampacity, stranding and dimensions
Conductor stranding follows UL 62: sizes 18 through 8 AWG are bunch-stranded and sizes 6 through 2 AWG are rope-lay stranded, which is what keeps the larger sizes flexible enough to handle repeatedly.
| Type and size | 2 current-carrying conductors | 3 current-carrying conductors | Conductor stranding |
|---|---|---|---|
| SOOW 18 AWG | 10 A | 7 A | Bunch-stranded per UL 62 |
| SOOW 16 AWG | 13 A | 10 A | Bunch-stranded per UL 62 |
| SOOW 14 AWG | 18 A | 15 A | Bunch-stranded per UL 62 |
| SOOW 12 AWG | 25 A | 20 A | Bunch-stranded per UL 62 |
| SOOW 10 AWG | 30 A | 25 A | Bunch-stranded per UL 62 |
| SOOW 8 AWG | 40 A | 35 A | Bunch-stranded per UL 62 |
| SOOW 6 AWG | 55 A | 45 A | Rope-lay stranded per UL 62 |
| SOOW 4 AWG | 70 A | 60 A | Rope-lay stranded per UL 62 |
| SOOW 2 AWG | 95 A | 80 A | Rope-lay stranded per UL 62 |
Read the two ampacity columns by current-carrying conductors, not by the number of cores in the cord. The 3-conductor column applies to a 3-conductor cord, and also to a 4-conductor cord where only three conductors carry current. The 2-conductor column applies to a 2-conductor cord, and to a 3-conductor cord where only two conductors carry current. An equipment grounding conductor does not count, and a neutral carrying only the unbalanced current of an otherwise balanced circuit does not count either.
Where four to six conductors do carry current, NEC 400.5 reduces each conductor to 80 percent of the tabulated value — a SOOW 12 AWG build with four current-carrying conductors works out at 16 A rather than 20 A. Values above assume a 30 °C ambient; a hotter environment requires the correction factors in the same article. These are code values for the cord type, not a TEBAOFLEX performance claim, and the applicable code edition for your jurisdiction governs.
Nominal outside diameter and shipping weight depend on the conductor count and the finished build, so they are confirmed against the production drawing at quotation rather than published as a single figure here. Send the size, conductor count and run length and the engineering team will return the dimensional sheet.
Standards
- ASTM B174 reference for stranded portable-cord conductors in the current product data.
- UL 62 and CSA C22.2 No. 49 are common portable-cord references; state the required listing and marking in the RFQ.
- Applicable flame, oil, water, weather and project inspection documents depend on the quoted construction and destination.
Do not infer a listing or approval from the SOOW type name alone. TEBAOFLEX will align the quotation documents with the requested market and equipment requirements.
