CGAU Single-Core Cable for Rail Vehicle and Bus Connections
CGAU is a single-core rubber-insulated and rubber-sheathed cable made in two ratings, 2/3.6 kV and 3.6/6 kV, for interconnecting wiring in locomotives, trolleybuses and similar track-bound vehicles. It is a small-section cable: the range runs from 2.5 mm² to 16 mm², and it is specified for protected routing inside pipes and closed installation ducts as well as for connecting moving parts.
The two voltages differ in insulation wall, not in conductor range. At 2/3.6 kV the wall is 1.8 to 2.0 mm; at 3.6/6 kV it is 3.0 to 3.2 mm, which takes the same 2.5 mm² conductor from a 9.0 mm to an 11.4 mm overall diameter. That difference decides whether a run will fit an existing duct, so the voltage has to be fixed before the route is measured.
- Rated voltages: 2/3.6 kV and 3.6/6 kV.
- Cross-sections: 2.5 mm² to 16 mm².
- Bending radius: 3 × D fixed, 5 × D flexing.
- Temperature: −40 °C minimum operating; +90 °C maximum conductor.
The CPE rubber sheath gives high resistance to weather, abrasion and oil. For 1.8/3 kV single-core switchgear and vehicle duty see NSGAFÖU, and for the halogen-free build see NSHXAFÖ.
CGAU Cable Construction
Three-layer single-core construction. The insulation compound is the only element that changes between the two voltage ratings.

| No. | Layer | Construction |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Conductor | Flexible annealed copper conductor to IEC 60228 class 5 |
| 2 | Insulation | EPR compound type 3GI3 for CGAU 2/3.6 kV; medium-voltage compound for CGAU 3.6/6 kV |
| 3 | Sheath | CPE rubber type 5GM3, black |
Compound standards
Insulation and sheath compounds are specified to DIN VDE 0207: Part 20 for the 3GI3 insulation and Part 21 for the 5GM3 sheath. Fire propagation is classified to IEC 60332-1 and EN 50265-2-1.
CGAU Applications
CGAU is an interconnecting conductor for locomotives, trolleybuses and comparable vehicles, resistant to ageing, weather and abrasion, with increased resistance to oil. It is specified for fixed installation in track-bound vehicles and buses, in pipes and closed installation ducts, and for the connection of moving parts.

- Interconnecting wiring in locomotives and track-bound vehicles.
- Trolleybus and bus connections where oil and weather resistance are required.
- Runs inside pipes and closed installation ducts.
- Connection of moving parts within the 5 × D flexing radius.
Application boundaries
This is a small-section cable and the range stops at 16 mm². Fix the required voltage rating before ducts are measured: the insulation wall, and therefore the overall diameter, differ substantially between the two ratings, so the same conductor size will not occupy the same space.
