Type SH 5kV–35kV Single-Core Shielded Mining Cable
Heavy-duty single-conductor (1/C) Type SH shielded medium-voltage portable mining power cable designed and manufactured to ICEA S-75-381 / NEMA WC 58 across five voltage classes: 5000 V, 8000 V, 15000 V, 25000 V and 35000 V (100% insulation level, 6 AWG through 500 kcmil). Combines a rope-lay tinned-copper conductor, extruded semi-conducting strand shield, 90 °C EPR insulation, flexible tinned-copper/textile braid shield and a reinforced two-layer lead-cured CPE outer jacket.
Where high-current medium-voltage power must be routed through tight mobile substation skids, open-pit dragline/shovel phase drops, portable switchgear jumpers, tunnel boring transformer interconnects or temporary mine power bypasses, three-conductor Type SHD-GC cables above 250 kcmil become too heavy and rigid to handle manually. Single-Conductor (1/C) Type SH Shielded Portable Mining Cable splits the three phases into individual flexible shielded single-core cables rated at 5 kV, 8 kV, 15 kV, 25 kV and 35 kV.
Designed and manufactured to ICEA S-75-381 / NEMA WC 58 (100% grounded insulation level), each Type SH cable starts with a rope-lay-stranded annealed tinned-copper conductor per ASTM B33 and B172 (133 strands on 6 AWG up to 1221 strands on 500 kcmil) covered by a thermosetting Extruded Strand Shield (ESS) and corona-resistant 90 °C Ethylene Propylene Rubber (EPR) insulation with nominal walls from 0.110 in (5 kV) up to 0.345 in (35 kV).
Unlike fixed Type MV-105 cables that use rigid helically applied copper tape shields (which buckle and fatigue when flexed repeatedly), Type SH portable cables utilize a flexible coated-copper and textile composite braid shield over the semi-conducting insulation shield—delivering 100% electrostatic stress control with high-flex fatigue life.
Over a self-fusing rubber separator tape, a reinforced two-layer extra-heavy-duty lead-cured Chlorinated Polyethylene (CPE) jacket protects the shield and dielectric against rock impact, abrasion, oil, moisture and sunlight from −40 °C to +90 °C.
For Canadian open-pit shovels, draglines, and mobile reeling machines specifying CSA C22.2 No. 96 braided ground-check (SHD-BGC), anti-torsion reeling (SHD-R), or semi-conductive polymeric phase screen (SHD-SP) constructions from 2 kV to 35 kV, review: CSA Type SHD-BGC, SHD-R and SHD-SP Shielded Mining Cable.

Applications
Specify Single-Conductor Type SH cable for flexible medium-voltage single-phase drops, mobile substation jumpers, portable switchgear connections and high-amperage mine bypass feeds from 5 kV to 35 kV.

- Single-phase flexible power drops and boom/gantry jumpers on large open-pit electric stripping shovels, loading shovels and walking draglines.
- Mobile mine substation skids, portable capacitor banks, transformer primary/secondary leads and temporary medium-voltage bypass lines (5 kV to 35 kV).
- High-current parallel feeder runs in underground and surface mines where single-conductor cables (up to 688 A per conductor at 500 kcmil) simplify pulling and termination.
- Medium-voltage test bays, generator load-bank hookups and portable shore-to-pit power distribution.

*Note on 8000 V table (Catalog p. 19): the source catalog prints 0.115 in alongside 3.81 mm (0.150 in equals 3.81 mm per ICEA 8 kV 100% wall, while 0.115 in equals 2.92 mm) and prints decimal points inside the strand counts (2.59–12.21 for 259–1221 strands); both values are preserved above for datasheet traceability.
**Sizes marked with double asterisks (500 kcmil at 25 kV; 350 kcmil and 500 kcmil at 35 kV) require extra-heavy-duty 0.205 in (5.21 mm) CPE jackets.
Ampacities are based on single-conductor free-air operation at 90 °C conductor temperature and 40 °C ambient air per ICEA S-75-381 / NEMA WC 58.
Stress-relief cones must be installed at all medium-voltage Type SH shield terminations, and the copper/textile braid shield must be grounded at least at one end (and preferably at all terminations and splices).
