AS/NZS mining cables are heavy-duty flexible elastomer power and reeling cables engineered with reference to joint Australian and New Zealand standards AS/NZS 1802, AS/NZS 2802, and AS/NZS 1972 to supply mobile and semi-fixed mining equipment under continuous earth-continuity and earth-fault protection. Selecting the right construction starts by separating the three standards by mine environment and cable duty: AS/NZS 1802 covers 200-series reeling and trailing cables for underground coal mines up to 11 kV, AS/NZS 2802 covers 400-series reeling and trailing cables for surface open-cut mines and underground metalliferous mines up to 33 kV, and AS/NZS 1972 covers Type 1 and Type 2S feeder cables for underground coal mine power distribution.
Within TEBAOFLEX’s mining and tunneling cables manufacturing program, nineteen Australian-standard cable types are built with reference to AS/NZS 1802, AS/NZS 2802, and AS/NZS 1972, pairing AS/NZS 1125 tinned flexible copper conductors with R-EP-90 or XR-EP-90 ethylene-propylene rubber insulation (AS/NZS 3808) and heavy-duty HD-85-PCP, XHD-85-PCP, or HD-90-CPE outer sheaths.
How Australian mining cable standards divide underground coal, open-cut, and feeder duty
Understanding Australian mining cable standards requires checking the regulatory boundary between gassy underground coal seams and non-coal or open-cut operations before comparing individual type numbers. Mine electrical safety frameworks overseen by state authorities such as the NSW Resources Regulator in New South Wales and WorkSafe Western Australia require trailing and reeling cables to match both the explosive-atmosphere classification of the mine and the earth-fault protection relay architecture of the supply substation.
Three core Australian and New Zealand standards govern the electrical and mechanical construction of flexible mining cables, supported by two companion material standards:
AS/NZS 1802(Underground coal mining reeling and trailing cables): Governs the200-seriesflexible elastomer cables (Type 209,Type 210,Type 240,Type 241,Type 241SF,Type 245,Type 245UF,Type 260, andType 275) from1.1/1.1 kVup to11/11 kV. EveryAS/NZS 1802construction is engineered around strict methane and coal-dust ignition mitigation, individual phase earth screening or pliable wire armour, and pilot-circuit interlocking so power is isolated immediately if a cable is crushed or severed.AS/NZS 2802(Reeling and trailing cables for surface mines and metalliferous mines): Governs the400-serieselastomer cables (Type 409,Type 412,Type 440,Type 441.1 Class 2,Type 441 Class 1,Type 450,Type 451, andType 455) from1.1/1.1 kVup to33/33 kV. Because open-cut iron ore, coal, bauxite, and hard-rock haul roads subject cables to extreme rock abrasion, high drum tension, and long high-voltage feeder runs for electric rope shovels and draglines,AS/NZS 2802introducesClass 1extra-heavy-dutyXR-EP-90/XHD-85-PCPcompound pairings and voltage classes up to22 kVand33 kV.AS/NZS 1972(Electric cables — Underground coal mines — Other than reeling and trailing): Covers semi-flexible feeder, flit-plug interconnection, and road-header or pump distribution cables (Mine Feeder Type 1,Type 2S, andType 2S.3) that are hung along roadways or relocated periodically rather than wound dynamically onto mobile machine reels.AS/NZS 1125andAS/NZS 3808(Conductors and insulating/sheathing compounds):AS/NZS 1125specifies the tinned annealed copper wire stranding (including flexible Class 5 and Class 6 constructions aligned with international conductor principles in IEC 60228:2023), whileAS/NZS 3808defines the thermal and mechanical grades forR-EP-90andXR-EP-90EPR insulation andHD-85-PCP,XHD-85-PCP,HD-90-CPE, and5V-90outer sheaths.

Decoding AS/NZS mining cable type numbers, screens, and earth-pilot geometry
Australian mining cable type numbers encode five construction choices: the mine sector (200-series vs 400-series), the phase-screening method (composite metallic/textile braid vs semi-conductive elastomer layer), the protective-earth conductor placement (screen-as-earth vs discrete interstitial earth cores), the number and position of pilot cores (1 central vs 3 interstitial vs 3 central extensible), and the nominal voltage suffix (.1, .3, .6, .11, .22, or .33).

Composite metallic braid screens vs semi-conductive elastomer screens
Every screened AS/NZS 1802 and AS/NZS 2802 reeling or trailing cable surrounds each insulated phase core with a protective earth screen so that any rock crush, roof fall, or insulation breakdown produces a phase-to-earth fault before a high-energy phase-to-phase arc can develop. Australian standard mining cables implement this barrier in two distinct ways:
- Composite tinned-copper and synthetic-yarn braid screens (
Type 209,Type 210,Type 240,Type 260,Type 409,Type 440,Type 450,Type 451): EachR-EP-90orXR-EP-90insulated phase core is wrapped in a woven composite braid of tinned annealed copper wires and nylon, polyamide, or polyester filaments (AS/NZS 1802/AS/NZS 2802). InType 209,Type 210,Type 240,Type 409, andType 440, the three metallic phase screens carry the full earth-fault return current directly and eliminate separate interstitial earth cores, keeping the cable outside diameter compact. InType 450andType 451(3.3–33 kV), composite phase screens work in parallel with two dedicated interstitial earth conductors to meet high-voltage fault ratings. - Semi-conductive elastomer phase screens with interstitial earth cores (
Type 241,Type 241SF,Type 245,Type 245UF,Type 441.1,Type 441,Type 455): Instead of a metallic wire braid over each phase, theR-EP-90orXR-EP-90insulation is enclosed by a semi-conductive elastomeric barrier layer that maintains intimate electrical contact with three interstitial earth conductors laid in the outer interstices (2interstitial earths inType 455). Because eliminating the metallic wire braid over the phase cores removes wire-on-wire fretting during tight monospiral or level-wind reeling, semi-conductive screened cables (241,245,441,455) are widely selected where high flexing cycles or broken screen wires would otherwise puncture the insulation.
Pilot core layouts (1 central vs 3 interstitial vs 3 central) and voltage suffixes
Pilot cores connect the gate-end box or field switch to a terminating diode or earth-continuity relay inside the mining machine, verifying earth loop integrity and disabling the contactor before power is applied:
- Single central pilot (
Type 209,Type 210,Type 241,Type 241SF,Type 275,Type 409,Type 441.1,Type 441): One extensibleR-EP-90-covered pilot conductor sits on the neutral bending axis at the center of the three power cores. Placing the pilot in the center equalizes tension when the cable bends in any direction over sheaves or rollers. - Three interstitial pilots (
Type 240,Type 440): When the three composite phase screens serve as the earth path and the center cradle is occupied by an elastomer profile, three insulated pilot cores sit in the outer interstices between the phase cores, providing extra control or monitoring channels. - Two interstitial earths + one interstitial pilot (
Type 450,Type 451,Type 455): In high-voltage open-cut shovel and dragline cables (3.3 kVto33 kV), three symmetrical outer interstices house two earth conductors and one pilot conductor (Type 451uses a reduced-size pilot core for smaller pilot-circuit glands). - Three central extensible pilots (
Type 245andType 245UF): Longwall shearers require multiple control and monitoring channels without sacrificing the three interstitial earth cores.Type 245andType 245UFgroup three extensible insulated pilot cores inside a central elastomeric core assembly surrounded by the three power cores and three semi-conductive-covered interstitial earths. - Voltage designation suffixes: The decimal number appended to the base type indicates the nominal system voltage in kilovolts ($U_0/U$):
.1=1.1/1.1 kV,.3=3.3/3.3 kV,.6=6.6/6.6 kV,.11=11/11 kV,.22=22/22 kV, and.33=33/33 kV(for example,Type 241.1is rated1.1/1.1 kV,Type 245.3 UFis rated3.3/3.3 kV, andType 450.22is rated22/22 kV).
AS/NZS 1802 mining cable selection for underground coal mines (200-series)
Choosing an AS/NZS 1802 mining cable for an underground coal face depends on how the machine moves: handheld drilling, general flitting and trailing, monospiral shuttle-car reeling, or high-cycle longwall shearer cable-handler chains. The table below compares all nine AS/NZS 1802 constructions manufactured by TEBAOFLEX.

Continuous miners, roof bolters, and longwall shearers (Type 209, Type 241, Type 241SF, Type 245, Type 245UF)
For continuous miners, road headers, and roof bolters operating at 1.1 kV or 3.3 kV, Australian underground coal mines standardize primarily on Type 209 and Type 241. As detailed in TEBAOFLEX’s Type 209 mining cable selection notes, Type 209 uses tinned-copper/polyamide braid screens over the three power cores as the combined earth conductor (2.5 mm² to 300 mm²), whereas Type 241 replaces the metallic wire braid with semi-conductive elastomer screens and three discrete interstitial earth conductors (6 mm² to 300 mm²). Where machine entries or onboard cable reels impose tighter routing radii and constant flexing, Type 241SF (Super Flexible) upgrades conductor and core lay geometry to reduce torsional stiffness.
On longwall coal faces, the shearer cable travels back and forth inside an articulated Bretby or chain-type cable handler along the armored face conveyor (AFC) while carrying both high-voltage cutter-motor power (1.1 kV, 3.3 kV, or 6.6 kV) and three pilot/control circuits. Type 245 provides three central extensible pilot cores (4.1 mm²) surrounded by three power cores and three semi-conductive-covered interstitial earths. For 1.1 kV and 3.3 kV longwall shearers in 50–150 mm² sizes where standard stranding fatigues prematurely inside the turnaround loop of the cable chain, Type 245UF (Ultra Flexible) uses finer wire stranding (0.20 mm wire diameter on phase and earth conductors) inside an open-weave reinforced HD-85-PCP jacket.
Shuttle cars, hand-held drills, and roadway armour (Type 275, Type 210, Type 240, Type 260)
Shuttle cars represent the most severe dynamic reeling duty in an underground coal mine: the vehicle accelerates rapidly between the continuous miner and the feeder breaker while paying cable on and off a hydraulic reel via a sheave wheel, reversing tension direction at the central anchor point. Both Type 240 and Type 260 datasheets explicitly exclude shuttle-car duty because metallic phase braids and steel wire armour suffer wire fatigue under rapid bidirectional reeling. Instead, AS/NZS 1802 designates Type 275 (1.1/1.1 kV, 10–95 mm²) specifically for underground coal shuttle cars, combining three R-EP-90 power cores, three interstitial earth cores, and one central pilot inside an anti-torsion HD-85-PCP sheath.
At the opposite end of the cross-section scale under AS/NZS 1802, Type 210.1 (1.5 mm² and 2.5 mm², 20.4–22.3 mm overall diameter) supplies 1.1 kV hand-held boring machines and face drills where operators must handle a lightweight cable with a 4 × D minimum bend radius. Where cables lie along crush-prone gate roads, stage loaders, or drift conveyors rather than reeling onto mobile drums, Type 260 (AS/NZS 1802) adds galvanized steel pliable wire armour over the three screened cores (16–300 mm², 1.1–11 kV) to resist falling rock and mechanical impact.
Reeling and trailing mining cables AS/NZS 2802 for open-cut and metalliferous mines (400-series)
When specifying reeling and trailing mining cables AS/NZS 2802 for surface open-cut mines or underground hard-rock metalliferous mines, engineers move from the 200-series to the 400-series. Surface iron ore, coal, copper, and gold mines operate massive electric rope shovels, walking draglines, rotary blast-hole drills, and mobile in-pit crushers fed at 3.3 kV, 6.6 kV, 11 kV, 22 kV, or 33 kV over long bench trailing paths and large vertical or horizontal cable reels.
Class 1 (XR-EP-90 / XHD-85-PCP) vs Class 2 (R-EP-90 / HD-85-PCP) compound duty
A critical engineering distinction inside AS/NZS 2802 is the split between Class 1 and Class 2 insulation and sheathing systems (AS/NZS 3808):
- Class 2 duty (
Type 409,Type 440, andType 441.1 Class 2): Uses standardR-EP-90ethylene-propylene rubber insulation and a heavy-dutyHD-85-PCPpolychloroprene outer sheath. In TEBAOFLEX’s catalog,Type 409(1.1–22 kV),Type 440(1.1–22 kV), and low-voltageType 441.1 Class 2(1.1/1.1 kV,6–300 mm²with three uninsulated interstitial earth conductors) are built to Class 2 specifications for general surface and underground metalliferous trailing and reeling duties. - Class 1 extra-heavy duty (
Type 441 Class 1,Type 450,Type 451, andType 455): Uses high-modulus cross-linkedXR-EP-90insulation paired with an extra-heavy-dutyXHD-85-PCPouter sheath reinforced by open-weave polyaramid braid. Class 1 constructions are specified from3.3/3.3 kVup to22/22 kV(Type 441 Class 1),11/11 kV(Type 455), and33/33 kV(Type 450andType 451) where heavy high-voltage cables drag over blasted bench rock or wind under high radial pressure on multi-layer shovel and dragline reels.

Selecting between Type 441, Type 450, Type 451, and Type 455 on high-voltage shovels and draglines
On medium- and high-voltage surface mining circuits (3.3 kV to 33 kV), Australian open-cut operations choose between two structural families inside AS/NZS 2802:
3E + 1 central pilotwith semi-conductive phase screens (Type 441 Class 1): Rated from3.3 kVto22 kV,Type 441places one extensible pilot core in the center cradle and three semi-conductive-covered earth conductors in the outer interstices. Because the phase screen is a non-metallic semi-conductive elastomer,Type 441avoids metallic braid wire breakage when wound onto motor-driven cable reels on electric shovels and blast-hole drills.2E + 1 interstitial pilot(Type 450,Type 451, andType 455): Instead of a central pilot core, these three cables place two earth conductors and one insulated pilot conductor in the three outer interstices around a solid central cradle profile.Type 450andType 451extend all the way to33/33 kV(Type 450.33/Type 451.33) using composite tinned-copper/polyester phase screens: chooseType 450when the specification calls for a full-size interstitial pilot matching the earth core cross-section (10–70 mm²), or chooseType 451when bolted couplers and pilot relays require a reduced6.0–10 mm²pilot conductor. Where the mine engineer prefers the same2E + 1 interstitial pilotgeometry at3.3–11 kVwithout metallic braid phase screens,Type 455substitutes semi-conductive elastomer phase barriers.
For 1.1/1.1 kV metalliferous underground drives, declines, and open-cut crusher plants where cables are clipped or laid along rock walls rather than reeled, Type 412 (1.5–300 mm²) provides flexible galvanized steel wire armour over three phase cores and three interstitial earth/pilot cores.
AS/NZS 1972 underground coal mine feeder cables (Type 1, Type 2S, and Type 2S.3)
Not every flexible cable in an underground coal mine winds onto a reeling drum or trails behind a continuous miner. Substation interconnects, district transformer links, stage-loader supplies, and dewatering pump feeders are suspended from roadway roof bolts or relocated between panel moves under AS/NZS 1972.
TEBAOFLEX manufactures two AS/NZS 1972 feeder families to match roadway voltage and flame-propagation class:
- Mine Feeder Type 1 cable (
1.1/1.1 kV,1.5–300 mm²): Constructed withAS/NZS 1125Class 5 tinned annealed copper conductors,V-90PVC core insulation (AS/NZS 3808), individual tinned-copper and polyester yarn composite braid screens (10.2 A/mm²fault current rating), two insulated interstitial pilot cores (1.5–10 mm²), and a heavy-duty5V-90PVC outer sheath meetingC3flame propagation performance (6 × ODminimum bend radius). - Mine Feeder Type 2S & Type 2S.3 cable (
1.1/1.1 kVforType 2Sin1.5–300 mm²;3.3/3.3 kVforType 2S.3in16–300 mm²): Upgrades the insulation to thermosetR-EP-90EPR (90 °Ccontinuous,250 °Cshort-circuit) and replaces the PVC jacket with a blackHD-90-CPEchlorinated polyethylene elastomer sheath rated forC1flame propagation performance (AS/NZS 1660.5.6), while retaining individual tinned-copper/polyester braid screens and two interstitial pilot cores (6 × ODminimum bend radius).
Thermal limits, minimum bending radius, and factory sheath marking verification
Long service life on reeling drums, shuttle-car sheaves, and longwall cable chains depends on respecting the thermal and mechanical limits built into AS/NZS 1802, AS/NZS 2802, and AS/NZS 1972:
- Conductor and sheath temperature ceilings (
AS/NZS 3808): Across bothR-EP-90(Class 2) andXR-EP-90(Class 1) EPR-insulated mining cables, the maximum continuous conductor operating temperature is90 °Cand the maximum short-circuit conductor temperature (5 smaximum duration) is250 °C. However, polychloroprene outer sheaths (HD-85-PCPandXHD-85-PCP) have a maximum surface temperature limit of85 °C. When multiple layer wraps remain parked on a powered reeling drum (such as a shuttle car or shovel reel), current capacity must be derated so accumulated drum heat never pushes the inner cable layers above the85 °CPCPjacket limit. - Minimum installation and reeling bend radius: Standard
AS/NZS 1802andAS/NZS 2802reeling and trailing cables (Type 209,241,241SF,245,245UF,275,409,440,441,450,451,455) specify a minimum bending radius of6 × OD(six times the overall cable diameter), while light1.5–2.5 mm²Type 210.1hand-held drill cables allow4 × D. Reeling drums, fairlead rollers, and sheave wheels should exceed6 × ODwherever space allows to avoid kinking interstitial earth cores or elongating the central pilot. - Maximum dynamic pulling tension: Calculate dynamic reeling tension solely from the total cross-sectional area of the three phase copper conductors (commonly capped at
15 N/mm²to20 N/mm²of phase copper depending on reel kinematics), never from the earth screens or pilot cores.
On TEBAOFLEX factory dispatch drums for AS/NZS 1802 and AS/NZS 2802 orders, each production length receives high-contrast embossed or printed sheath markings identifying the voltage rating, AS/NZS type designation, conductor cross-section, manufacturing year, and sequential meter marks (for example, Cable 1.1kV Type 241.1 Mining Cable 35mm² with progressive meter stamps 020m, 025m, 027m, 032m). Sequential meter marking allows mine electrical tradespeople to track remaining drum length during underground flit-plug termination and quickly isolate damaged sections without unwinding the entire reel.

What to specify when ordering AS/NZS mining cables
Preparing a complete technical schedule before submitting an enquiry ensures that the quoted AS/NZS 1802, AS/NZS 2802, or AS/NZS 1972 construction matches your mine’s protection relays, couplers, and reeling hardware. Include these five items in your RFQ:
Where automated longwall shearers, continuous miners, or stacker-reclaimers require integrated optical telemetry alongside 1.1/1.1 kV or 1.9/3.3 kV screened power cores, specify: AS/NZS 1802 Type 245F and 241F Electro-Optic Mining Cable.
- Standard and exact type designation: State the governing standard (
AS/NZS 1802,AS/NZS 2802, orAS/NZS 1972), the exact type number and voltage suffix (such asType 209.3,Type 241.1,Type 245.3 UF,Type 275.1,Type 441.11, orType 450.22), and whetherSF(Super Flexible),UF(Ultra Flexible),Class 1, orClass 2construction is required. - Phase, earth, and pilot cross-sections: Nominal power core size (
1.5 mm²to300 mm²), earth arrangement (composite phase screens vs3or2interstitial earth cores), and pilot core count and size (1central,3interstitial,3central extensible, orType 451reduced-size interstitial pilot). - Machine duty and reeling geometry: Equipment type (continuous miner, longwall shearer Bretby chain, shuttle car, roof bolter, open-cut electric shovel, dragline, drill, or roadway feeder), minimum drum barrel or sheave diameter, and maximum cable layer count on the reel.
- Jacket colour and sheath marking requirements: Standard heavy-duty black
HD-85-PCP/XHD-85-PCP/HD-90-CPEor site-specified high-visibility outer jacket colors, plus any custom print legend or sequential meter-marking format. - Cut lengths, drum packaging, and delivery schedule: Individual cut lengths per reel (for example,
100 m,250 m, or500 mper flange drum) and total order meterage. Per TEBAOFLEX’s verified company profile (as of August 2026), the minimum order quantity is50 mfor both standard and custom cable constructions, with typical production lead times of7–45 working daysdepending on cable type and customization.
